5 Ways to Lead a Happier Life

We all know that being happy is the most fulfilling way to live, but what exactly does “happiness” mean? While some associate it with success in money and hard work, others consider it a spiritual journey that lasts throughout life. With such a vague definition of “happiness”, it’s no wonder that people are confused as to what can be done to achieve satisfaction in their lives. Although we may not know exactly what it means, we can nevertheless find opportunities to improve our mental perspective, which will lead to a better outlook on life. Below are five steps that you can take to live a positive lifestyle.

Smile!

This simple act of turning up the corners of your mouth goes a long way. Even if it’s forced at first, a smile is known to stimulate feel-good chemicals (e.g. dopamine) that make you less stressed, more relaxed, and more likely to act good-natured towards people. By doing so, people will feel more at ease with you, as well as enjoy your company and promote positive interaction. Not only that, but you will also feel well-connected to others, and even to yourself.

Get out and explore more

If you tend to be on the Internet all day, whether in the office or at home, it is time to unplug and get outside. Being in the outdoors is not only a change in scenery, but it is also a great way to get some sunshine on your face for that extra vitamin D boost. Spending time in nature allows you to get away from the distractions of work and the Internet, which at times can be stressful, and also helps you self-reflect and discover new aspects in the world around you.

Leave positive messages for yourself

Need a bit of self-motivation? Take time out of your day to write inspirational messages for yourself that you can refer to in the near future. Place a sticky note on your bathroom mirror before your upcoming school exam, as means of encouraging you to perform well (“You can do it!”). Or schedule a small reminder on your phone’s calendar to treat yourself to a nice dinner and movie after work. The little things that you do for yourself will brighten your perspective on that day, as well as encourage you to perform to your best ability to achieve satisfaction in yourself.

Help others around you

In an increasingly busy and self-oriented society, the ideal of helping the community has become less common. Despite this lifestyle, helping others creates the gratification of experiencing other people’s happiness. Whether you choose to volunteer at a local hospital or simply help an individual with schoolwork, you are able to foster development and improvement in one’s life. In the end, their success becomes your success too.

Don’t dwell on mistakes

None of us are perfect, so it’s best to expect yourself to fall once in a while. Instead of repeating your mistakes over and over again in your head, acknowledge them and move on. There is no point in brooding over something in the past, especially when you can’t really change it. Learn about what went wrong, and think about how to avoid it next time. When you deal with mistakes more lightheartedly, you’ll be able to accept and be happy with yourself.
