Don’t Worry, Be Happy: Five Ways to Make it Happen

In our weakest moments, we are bombarded by so many messages from friends, family, doctors, and popular culture on the absolute necessity of finding happiness that they sometimes make us more anxious.

We should push past this anxiety to pursue happiness as if our lives depended on it. You’ll find that it’s true: our lives improve as our happiness increases. As you take these steps, you will discover that less really is more when it comes to finding peace of mind.

Taking steps to a greater sense of self and contentment may be hard at first, but if you get back to basics, make yourself active, and are open to a change of scenery, it may end up leading to the self-reflection that you and your body need to reboot your life.

Be Present: It’s all about living a life that’s true to yourself, and not what others expect of you. Being present means recognizing that in your current existence, you have control over your perspective. Are you seeing a stressful situation at work as an opportunity to teach teamwork or a reason to complain for the rest of the day? Are you seeing your past as a series of lost dreams or an open door to a future you never imagined? Your choice of perspective will make all the difference between dragging through life and loving the life you’ve got.

Get rid of what you don’t need—physically and spiritually: (According to Moneycrashers), you are not only making your space cleaner when you get rid of things that have worn out their usefulness. Declutter your bedroom for a more comfortable, relaxing place to sleep. Clean your home office for better financial peace of mind and greater productivity. Organize your closet and your dresser drawers to make the mornings easier. Less stuff means less stress.

Reclaim your weekends: Weekends should not just be about running errands but more about doing things not connected to work. Each weekend’s activities are like mini-vacations, and they are important to recharge your mind and body. Do something new and have a change of scene. A hike or a bike ride at a nearby park with friends is a great way to get some exercise, fresh air, and social interaction.

Bust A Move: Even if working is a necessity, sitting at the desk all day is unhealthy for both the mind and the body. Get up and walk around every waking hour for at least a couple of minutes, and take a walk every day during your lunch hour. Instead of happy hour, organize a walking group with friends or coworkers. Once you’ve elevated your fitness level, add jogging to your walking routine. Jogging causes endorphins to be released, which gives you a natural “runner’s high.”

Eat Mindfully: We’ve discussed this before, but it’s been scientifically proven that eating junk makes you feel, well, pretty junky. If your foods make you bloated, constipated or sleepy, you aren’t going to feel very happy. If you choose your snacks and meal components with intent, and relax to enjoy it rather than grab it on the go, you will get real pleasure from what you’re eating, as well as all of the nutritional benefits of these better choices.

  1. This is a great article. So many people have anxiety and are medicated. If we would do these 5 things I think it would help a lot. We need to be positive. People get caught up in all the negativity. Thanks for article.
